The County of Morris plans to replace the Martin Luther King Avenue Bridge over the Whippany River and implement improvements to the bridge and roadway approaches to provide efficient crossing and enhance safety for all modes of transportation, including pedestrians and bicycles. The bridge (Structure No. 1400-118) was originally constructed in 1822, widened in 1883 as well as 1928, and is now in need of replacement.
Morris County, in coordination with NJDOT, NJTPA and FHWA, completed the Local Concept Development (LCD) Study in Spring 2020 and the Local Preliminary Engineering (LPE) phase in Fall 2024. The project has been advanced to the Final Design (FD) phase as of Winter 2026. The Construction phase will follow FD with a duration dependent on the bridge replacement improvements to be implemented and upon federal funding availability.
Community involvement is an important part of this bridge project, and the Project Team encourages the community and general public to participate and provide input during this phase and future phases via this website.
